Growth

Growth

For the first time in its sixteen-year history, it was decided that the Cowichan Artisans each create a single piece based on a theme. We all then get to make something with this word, or theme, in mind. And we all work in different mediums so the end results will be varied and personal. The interesting thing about this process is that there is no right or wrong interpretation.

This year's theme was Growth. And with growth in mind I created this egg-shaped piece. The egg is responsible for the growth and life of many creatures. It is a soothing and comforting, yet vigorous form.

This coiled stoneware egg is also a rattle. I left bits of clay inside the piece, sealed it up, finished the exterior design and fired it - twice. The sounds that it makes when moved and shaken also represents life, and the potential for Growth.
